Logistic.Ru — Thailand's military government has told reporters in the South East Asia country it is to go ahead with a THB62 billion baht (€1.5 billion) expansion plan at Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport.

Reports say that Thailand will also build a third runway worth THB19 billion baht (€464 million) at the gateway and also plans to build another three provincial airports, the country's transport minister air chief marshal, Prajin Juntong, is quoted as explaining.

Reuters explains that the second-phase of the expansion of Suvarnabhumi will have to be done quickly to meet increasing numbers of travellers, while a committee will be set up to look into project details before presenting them to cabinet for approval.

On September 29, Airports of Thailand, the country's largest airport operator, said it planned to spend expand capacity at Suvarnabhumi, while the plan is subject to approval from the transport ministry.

The operator previously said the expansion over the next five years would increase capacity at the airport to 80 million a year by 2017.

Suvarnabhumi has the capacity to handle about 45 million passengers a year, but actually handled around 50 million last year, although in recent months traffic has dropped due to the continued political unrest in Thailand.
